Review: Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

The Civil War has always been one of the least-explored eras throughout history, with most of our focus being on World War II and the droves of faceless Nazis we’ve driven into oblivion. Failing that, prequels are often left to rot in the gaming world, and end up as bargain bin fodder soon after their release (Contract J.A.C.K., anyone?), but this Civil War shooter stands steady on its own two feet. Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood provides some tight and entertaining Civil War shootouts, though if you ask me, it could have been a bit longer.

Impressions: Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley

To some people, there’s nothing better than a good old fashioned game of football. I’m not one of those people. In fact, I couldn’t tell you the first thing about the sport, save from the fact that you make touchdowns and there’s a lot of showboating involved when said touchdowns are made. Impressions: Bubble Town 2

There’s always been a soft spot in my heart for Puzzle Bobble (also known as Bust a Move) and titles that have drawn inspiration from it. I was pleased to no end to find that the legacy had continued on the iPhone/iPod Touch with Bubble Town 2, a game that mirrors the classic color-matching, bubble-bursting franchise exactly, and one that has been absolutely burning up the Facebook community with millions of fans.  So does the portable version live up to its social-networking inspiration?

Impressions: Magna Carta 2

Let’s face it – the Japanese RPG genre has stagnated over the years. While we are graced with the occasional hit title that we can’t cease heaping praise upon, we are also buried under hundreds of knockoffs that bring The Last Remnant to mind, or (at best) poor imitations of Final Fantasy. For a console generation with so much power, you’d think that Western offerings wouldn’t always outshine Eastern offerings that once enthralled and overjoyed its fanbase, myself included. In the case of Magna Carta 2, this modest and wholly underrated RPG fulfills its humble mission to prove that we need not be mired in the ways of the classic JRPG. It’s gorgeous on the outside, and it also boasts genuine charm and nouveau excitement. And that’s just what the doctor ordered.

Impressions: iCarly

Children’s games are usually not ones to look to when you’re in need of some exemplary gameplay, nor graphics. Fortunately, there are a few interesting titles to be found within the realm of kid-dom that don’t entirely strike out. What’s more, some of those titles are even based on licensed properties. Take Nickelodeon’s hit show iCarly.  It didn’t take long for the videogame adaptations to arrive, but can the plight of talented teens and their webcam show translate onto the Nintendo Wii and DS?  Better than you might expect, I swear!
