Review: Daytona USA

Daytona USA is a classic arcade racer with a bit of a difficult history. Though it ruled the arcades with an iron fist, its ports have never quite cut the mustard. Nearly twenty years later following a tumultuous release history, Sega has finally brought AM2’s original arcade smash Daytona USA to the Xbox Live Arcade (and PSN) after successfully reviving several other beloved Dreamcast releases. At an affordable price and featuring upscaled HD graphics, it’s finally the update fans deserve and have been more than patient for. Rolling Start!

Review: Worms: Ultimate Mayhem

Having grown up with the Worms series, I’ve been around for their several incarnations over the years and have enjoyed most of them to some degree. However, when it comes to their three-dimensional installments Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem, I’ve had to draw the line. For some reason moving from an isometric view muddles the entire ordeal of worm warfare into something unrecognizable and more like a chore to play. Worms: Ultimate Mayhem brings the two together in one tidy little package for purchase on Xbox Live Arcade, but it’s not exactly the starting point for the series that I would recommend.

Review: Orcs Must Die!

Your fortress is under siege by hundreds of bloodthirsty orcs. You’ve got deadly traps, spells, and some beastly weapons at your disposal. What do you do? You strategically place spiked platforms, walls of spears, and break out your crossbow, of course! Orcs Must Die! is an effective my-castle-is-under-attack-by-these-enormous-monsters sim and one that serves up plenty of crafty good fun. As you step into the shoes of a War Mage, a member of the mystical Order, you’re tasked with defending your tower from the Mob, a faction comprised of orcs, ogres, hellbats, and other nasties who barge in any way they can to wreak havoc upon the world. It’s your job to keep them at bay using any means necessary. This quick-and-dirty tower defense game may be a little on the shallow side, but it’s certainly worth your time.

Review: Rotastic

I’m so used to iPhone titles being runaway hits that when viewing Rotastic, an Xbox Live Arcade game, my first instinct was to look it up via App Store and compare pricing and value. To my surprise, I couldn’t locate the game. After spending several hours with Rotastic I was convinced it had once been a mobile title having made the leap to console, as it looks and feels so much like the work of a mobile developer that I could barely believe it was exclusive to consoles and PC. This colorful and frenetic easy-to-learn but difficult-to-master puzzler is a blast, and though it isn’t available for on the go play now, I have a feeling it soon will be.

Review: Leedmees

Remember Lemmings? Those helpless little guys would walk straight off a cliff if you’d let them. And I let them, more often than not, because I found it hilarious. When faced with Konami’s Leedmees, an Xbox Live Arcade Kinect title seemingly inspired by those impressionable little creatures, I was intrigued. First of all, what in the world were those bizarre stick-men featured on the game’s artwork, and what kind of Kinect motion control could possibly be used here? The answers were actually quite impressive.
