Impressions: Go Play City Sports

As you may have garnered from my previous Go Play reviews, I have not enjoyed entries to the franchise so much. I feel that they have absolutely not gotten better with subsequent attempts, with each one being worse than the last and blatant attempts at robbing the pockets of mindless “family-oriented gamers” everywhere. Then I was offered Go Play City Sports. While it obviously isn’t going to be aggregating any fantastic scores, I did not absolutely abhor my time with it as I have with previous titles such as Lumberjacks.

Impressions: Groovin' Blocks

Let’s face it – the Wii is the best choice out of the current home consoles for puzzlers. WiiWare was practically built for the creation and sale of various types of games that challenge your brain and your patience. There’s nothing wrong with that, though the system has so much more potential. In addition, the majority of most puzzlers are, in some way or another, carbon copies of games from the past. One game in particular, Groovin’ Blocks, has been done before under a much more popular name – Lumines. However, the Wii has never been privy to such a slick and entertaining block-dropping puzzle fest until now.

Impressions: Little King's Story

The Wii has proved its worth several times over as a viable host for RTS-lite titles aiming for a much wider audience than something such as say, StarCraft or similiar games would reach in the eyes of game developers. This, combined with the timeless allure of ruling over subjects as a revered king must have been what XSEED Games had in mind when publishing the diminutive Little King’s Story. I must admit the title is a bit misleading, as it lulls one into a false sense of security that the game will be as small in scope as the word “little” suggests. In fact, it is much more than a “little” story, and more like a giant’s story both in scope and the amount of entertainment it dishes out.

Review: The Conduit

The Wii has become a sort of mecca for shovelware, lackluster forays in minigames, and other throwaway adventures that are nowhere near the $30-$50 you might be spending. First-person shooters are very hit-or-miss on the console as well, which is why I was pleasantly surprised upon taking notice of The Conduit, one of the system’s most solid offerings. While it isn’t breaking the FPS mold and it certainly isn’t turning the genre on its head, it offers some decidedly fantastic gameplay that you can’t argue with since the Wii sorely needs a title like this to even begin to stand up to heavy-hitters like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Review: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord

Final Fantasy as a franchise is forever branching out and taking entirely different paths. From the adorable minigame collections (Chocobo Tales) to the fighters (Dissidia), Square Enix is never afraid to create games other than RPGs utilizing characters or concepts within the universe. Upon playing My Life as a Dark Lord, a tower defense title obtainable as a WiiWare title, I am convinced that they can make any genre work, so long as they approach it with the right attitude and color palette. Having never previously played My Life as a King, I can’t quite compare it to anything I’ve played before, but rest assured, even through its sometimes intractable difficulty, it’s a whole lot of fun.
