Impressions: My Baby First Steps

There are few things I despise more in this world than babies and baby fanatics who want nothing more than to coddle an infant all day long. I think I’d much rather take life in jail over even touching one. No, I’m not changing my mind on this. I’m simply not a kid person. Never have, never will be. Animals are more my speed, thus I’ve enjoyed many an animal sim over the years via GigaPets and Tamagotchi, Nintendogs, and even Dogz, Catz, and Oddballz back in my younger days. With the growing trend of aiming baby-oriented games toward young girls these days, I see a resurgence of the trend only with rugrats in place of animals really being pushed. While playing through My Baby First Steps for the Nintendo Wii and DS it’s true I wanted to shove hot coals into my eyes as I simply cannot bring myself to enjoy taking care of virtual babies, but I must say it’s really a step up from any other standard shoddy simulation titles we’re putting in the hands of children.

Review: Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love

New York, New York! It’s the city that never sleeps. According to Japan, it’s also plagued by malevolent demons. But not to worry — the theater troupe of Little Lip Theater is always on call. Yes, they can put on a magnificent show, but they’re also tasked with keeping the citizens of the Big Apple safe. Unfortunately, their newest member isn’t quite who they were expecting: the nephew instead of his respected uncle Ogami! How are they supposed to put on mindblowing performances and keep the peace with this mousy greenhorn tagging along? It’s up to the player to see that Ogami’s successor, Lt. Shinjiro Taiga, rises to the occasion in Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, for both the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2.

Hands-On Preview: Frobot “Multiplaya” (PAX East)

We all know the Wii’s motion controls encourage us to shake it. Fugazo’s Andrew Lum (whom you may know as the “Nintendo Fanboy” kicked that notion up a notch and created a video game that’s based entirely on a robot with an affinity for getting funky. Frobot, starring a glammed-up, Afro-sporting, smooooooth mutha-robot who’s on a mission to reclaim his five (yes, five — he gets more action than you) ladybots from the clutches of certain evil, is just as zany as it sounds. Frobot’s crisp white leisure suit metal body, his foxy red shades, and his smarmy disco-bot attitude are certainly unique. I’m not sure I can say I’ve ever seen a character quite like him. Fro-bot-miiiiite!

Review: All Star Cheer Squad

I think it’s safe to say by now that cheerleading sims are not my cup of tea. In fact, the majority of gamers wouldn’t give All Star Cheer Squad a second glance as they breeze through the Wii section at their favorite store. However, for its intended audience (namely little girls or even some adults who have always wanted to be cheerleaders) it’s actually quite the solid title.

Impressions: iCarly

Children’s games are usually not ones to look to when you’re in need of some exemplary gameplay, nor graphics. Fortunately, there are a few interesting titles to be found within the realm of kid-dom that don’t entirely strike out. What’s more, some of those titles are even based on licensed properties. Take Nickelodeon’s hit show iCarly.  It didn’t take long for the videogame adaptations to arrive, but can the plight of talented teens and their webcam show translate onto the Nintendo Wii and DS?  Better than you might expect, I swear!
