Review: Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days

There’s no denying that Laharl is one of the coolest characters when it comes to the world of Disgaea. Or is it Etna? Or Pleinair? In any case, the Disgaea series is known for some of its more colorful characters, especially the recognizable flame-haired Etna. Imagine the surprise when Disgaea 2 introduced Adell and Rozalin, completely different protagonists that didn’t seem to fit in so well the original game’s attitude. With that, a new can of worms was opened, one that fans were eager to jump right into despite initial hestiancy. More Disgaea? Yes please! How could anyone pass that up? Disgaea 2 was released a few years ago now, but that very same experience has been brought to the ultra-portable PSP in the form of Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. It packs all of the frustratingly hard gameplay, spunky characters, and brand-new story chapters into a package you can take along with you anywhere you want to escape to a world where Overlords run rampant and magical quests abound, with great finesse. This is a port you can be proud of.

Review: Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble

When being a man isn’t enough, you’ve got to step up your game. Considerably. Good looks, charm, intelligence, and even riches can only take you so far; to really get ahead, you need swagger and strength. You’ve gotta become a bona fide badass: a Bancho. In the tumultuous Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, another quirky offering from Atlus, your one true goal is to display the most Banchosity. That means smash talking your way into some ridiculous situations, staring down any rivals with electric Menchi beams, and striving to become the toughest on your turf (along with everyone else’s). Those familiar with the pompadoured, tough-talking, gang-affiliated students popularized in Japanese anime and culture should delight in stepping into the shoes of these delinquents who care about nothing more than being bad.

Review: Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny

Fighting games are evolving, right before our very eyes. No longer are they simple grudge matches between superpowered titans or scantily clad women, they are pseudo-RPGs, overflowing with character customization options, challenges to complete, and awesome guest stars, including some that seem eerily out of place (Yoda, anyone?). Perhaps the fighter that dabbles the most in said deviations from the past is Soulcalibur. It has long held a special place in my heart reserved only for the best of the best. Ever since I laid eyes on Soul Blade, I knew I’d never forget the series or what it stood for. Here we are all these years later and the latest release, Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny is still blowing me away. Juicy customization, explosive guest appearances, and the core Soulcalibur experience are intact. What more could you ask for?

Impressions: Half Minute Hero

I’ll be honest — some games can only hold my attention for 30 seconds. The gaming industry is in a sad state of affairs if I’m ready to turn off my console after such a paltry amount of time. But it doesn’t have to be! No, with all of the emerging creative, unique, and wholly interesting titles on the horizon, we no longer have to settle into terrible games and wait for them to be over. No, we can become engrossed in adventures that make us laugh until we cry, save the world, and become a hero of heroes…all in 30 seconds. Welcome to the world of Half Minute Hero.

Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona

Avid RPG fans do not simply sit by and wait for a teeth-gnashingly frustrating adventure to fall into our laps. No – the allure of ephemeral fantasy found within such juicy morsels of entertainment is much too great to abstain from. We rummage the bargain bins, pillage RPG-centric forums, and bask in the exalted knowledge of Wikipedia in order to corral our next fix. It’s an oppressive task, sifting through slipshod plots and pithy character archetypes, but the end result ensures that we are left with a game most deserving of our 100 hours of grinding, as well as the sleepless nights spent pondering the elemental weaknesses of yet undefeated villains.
