Preview: Cho Aniki Zero

In the beginning, there was man. In the beginning of shooter Cho Aniki, there were many scantily-clad men. And it was good. Thanks to Aksys Games and their penchant for all things zany, us wacky American gamers are being given the chance to play through a brand new homoerotic adventure via the loving PlayStation Network. The downloadable title Cho Aniki Zero has been officially announced for a PSP release, and it’s looking rather buff.

Review: Jikandia: The Timeless Land

If Half-Minute Hero taught me anything, it’s that a gimmick can make a game. Similarly, it can also break it. Jikandia: The Timeless Land’s gimmick is similar to the former in that you are timed to make it through each area. What’s more, you can name the amount of time you think it’s going to take you to clear a level. If you think it’s going to take you a mere minute to complete one stage, it’s your call. Time marches on whether you crash and burn or excel at felling each beast and bringing down the final boss. The longer you stay in the world, the better your rewards, and it’s all up to you. If you choose an insufficient amount of time, you’ll pay dearly and find yourself failing all too often. It sounds like a perfectly workable, modern concept, and a spiritual successor to the raucous and enjoyable Half-Minute Hero, right? So why did I find myself constantly itching to power the PSP off?

Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Hand The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky to modern RPG fans and they’ll likely balk at its outdated sprites, lengthy conversations, and staunchly traditional values .”It’s so old,” they’ll say, all the while clamoring for more beautiful Bishonen and generic shooters. And as they make their way through the world of Liberl, which feels more alive to me than any wasteland or bullet-ridden country, they’ll look for any sort of gimmickry that could bring the game more into the modern age. And I’ll gladly ask them why they want to fix what’s broken. This class-act RPG from Falcom and publisher Xseed games, a departure from the popular Ys (though unrelated) series, is devoid of so many RPG trappings yet rife with the ones that make us nostalgic. And for that, it should be praised.

Impressions: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

The third time out on American shores for the Tactics Ogre franchise is most certainly a charm. Following a fantastic debut on the Super Famicom, the isometric strategy-RPG moved on to the PlayStation, and also the Game Boy Advance for portable tactical battles to take on the go. Square Enix’s dazzling return to form, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the PlayStation Portable, is a remake of the original Super Famicom release and later Sega Saturn port that had an entire generation of gamers enamored with its memorable characters, intertwining storylines, and deep gameplay. For what is arguably one of the best tactics adventures ever developed, this PSP edition does the fanbase a fantastic service and makes it even better.

Review: Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!

Etna, fan-favorite Disgaea vixen, has a problem: her panties have been pilfered. This demon princess simply can’t stand for lingerie being lifted, so off fly 1000 Prinnies to retrieve the garments in question. And how are they going to go about it? By collecting rare items (soda cups, anyone?) and trapping the panty-raiding son-of-a-gun by using those gathered items as bait. It’s awkward, it’s hilarious, and it’s, well…expected. Welcome to Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!
