Preview: NeverDead

NeverDead seemed to me a bit like the spiritual successor to Beetlejuice, and I’ve never quite been sure why. Perhaps the main character, Bryce, resonates with that Michael Keaton-like energy – oh, and he can use his limbs as weapons. As we traipsed around the Sega booth and settled down for some hands-on with the frenetic limb-slinging third-person adventure, I quickly realized that the only comparison I could draw between the two pieces of media were that they both prominently featured death in some way, and that some bits were more frustrating than others. Unfortunately, the raucous fun of Beetlejuice wasn’t exactly evident in this demo build of the upcoming Devil May Cry-esque outing.

Preview: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Another year, another Call of Duty. That’s something most gamers count on as the months roll on by and we near November. At E3 2011 we were treated to a behind closed doors and hands-off look at the much-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 thanks to our friend Neil with Activision. As we passed through the backstage area rife with food (gone in the fifteen minutes it took us to see gameplay) and funneled into the small, dark room with the high-definition display in the center, we knew we were in for something exciting. Something so exciting we couldn’t even take pictures or video, despite half of the gameplay being displayed at Microsoft’s press conference and now readily available all over the internet. Something…modern.

Preview: Aliens: Colonial Marines

Aliens vs. Predator, an earlier Sega release that attempted to bring an authentic Aliens/Predator experience to our current-gen consoles, didn’t exactly thrill me. All of the components for a great game were there, like the killer license and mechanics that sounded slightly innovative, at least on paper. It ended up disappointing me, as I knew it would, so when Aliens: Colonial Marines (first announced so many years ago now) was available to take a sneak peek at E3, I jumped at the chance. Randy Pitchford, Sega, and members of the Gearbox team were on hand for a hands-off preview of the upcoming shooter, and I have to say I’m certainly on board for more.

Preview: Sonic Generations 3D

Fearing the latest Sonic release bucks traditional Sonic conventions yet again and opts for a newer, “cooler” look, complete with cheesy rock and terrible mechanics? Get outta town, guy. This is the most “classic” Sonic adventure yet. Sonic Generations 3D, which I happily devoured in the comfort of the sprawling Sega booth, will thrill both old-school and new-school fans of the fastest thing alive. I took a seat at the PlayStation 3 complete with 3D glasses (more like goggles if you ask me, with the way the cord had to be banded around my head) and strapped myself in for a remixed Sonic stage, side-scrolling deliciousness, and a remixed and remastered stage from Sonic Adventure.

Preview: Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

Sonic and Mario, the unlikeliest of duos, have teamed up once again for a show of colorful mini-games, diversions, and zaniness to bring you Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, coming to Wii and Nintendo 3DS. Previously the plumber, hedgehog, and all of their friends took off to Beijing and Vancouver, and it’s that time again to head out to London for another round of realistic sporting events, fantastical “dream” events, and daunting motion control that will test your skills as well as your patience. Okay, mostly your patience, as far as the Wii events are concerned.
