Preview: Sonic Generations 3D

Fearing the latest Sonic release bucks traditional Sonic conventions yet again and opts for a newer, “cooler” look, complete with cheesy rock and terrible mechanics? Get outta town, guy. This is the most “classic” Sonic adventure yet. Sonic Generations 3D, which I happily devoured in the comfort of the sprawling Sega booth, will thrill both old-school and new-school fans of the fastest thing alive. I took a seat at the PlayStation 3 complete with 3D glasses (more like goggles if you ask me, with the way the cord had to be banded around my head) and strapped myself in for a remixed Sonic stage, side-scrolling deliciousness, and a remixed and remastered stage from Sonic Adventure.

Review: Two Worlds II

Two Worlds II contains hilariously bad voice-acting, awkward scenarios, and far less polish than similar games in the genre. But so what? The time that I spent with it was some of the most rewarding I have gotten from an RPG this year (and that includes Mass Effect 2’s DLC). From the very beginning of my quest, opting to journey as a blonde surfer-dude look-alike, complete with a cute little braid in his hair (why couldn’t I choose to be female?), I reveled in its thoroughly B-movie atmosphere, which include hilarious one-liners and memorable reactions my traveler could provide when prompted for a response with voice dialogue – all spoken, by the way. While I never got to experience the original Two Worlds, I found its successor a wholly enjoyable, engrossing, and absolutely gorgeous, if not massively flawed experience. It’s a precious stone – one that hasn’t been polished just yet. When and if Reality Pump does so, the franchise will blossom into something truly formidable.

Review: Nyko Raven Motion Sensing Wireless Controller with Vibration

Any third-party controller that improves on a console’s proprietary offering is OK in my book. Nyko’s Raven series of wireless controllers for the PlayStation 3 do this and more, at least in most areas, and even offer Sony fans a tantalizing way to ferry over 360 fans to Sony’s media behemoth – a PS3 controller with the layout of a 360 controller. Available in both Standard (DualShock layout) and Alternate (Xbox 360 layout) designs, the Raven is a formidable third-party alternative to the standard-issue Sony choices in terms of design and the way the controller feels while gaming, but it does possess a few hiccups that may make those strapped for cash think twice before committing.

Review: DC Universe Online (One Month Check-In)

Time constraints and an avalanche of games falling from my enormous backlog kept me out of the MMO fold for quite some time, but one title finally struck my fancy enough to bring my inner supervillain out of hiding: DC Universe Online. I’d avoided MMOs for years, fearing the cost of addiction rearing its ugly head. But it’s 2011. It’s a new year, a fresh start, and I’m rockin’ shiny new spandex while l smear the good guys all over the pavement. It’s been about a month into my masquerading as a costumed supervillain, and I’m here to report back.

Impressions: Modern Combat: Domination

Downloadable titles are indeed a mixed bag. On one hand, you have some truly spectacular offerings that are a great value for the money and exemplary of what the console is capable of. Some, on the other hand, aren’t worth the time they take to download. No matter the case, it’s always impressive to see what improvements are constantly being made. Mobile dev Gameloft has taken advantage of console downloadable constraints to bring the latest installment of their popular smartphone nod to Modern Warfare and the Call of Duty series, Modern Combat: Domination. Complete with Move support, this is an interesting port that brings some intriguing ideas to the table, but ultimately strikes out as just another cookie-cutter “modern” shooter with little to offer.
