I love dogs. I love cats. Actually, I’m a big animal fan, period. I just can’t get enough of our furry little friends. Especially puppies. Forget children and “hot guys.” Puppies are my vice. And the sweetest app for the iPhone/iPod Touch caters directly to me because of that. Puppy Palooza may be a very simple music memorization game, but it’s cute! Coming from Rock Ridge Games, makers of similar fare with Western Wind and Kitty Chorus, it’s also fun. And it’s cheap.

Impressions: Groovin’ Blocks (Mobile)
Often, when games are ported to mobile platforms from their big brother console counterparts, much is lost in translation. Fortunately, puzzle games do not often succumb to this loss of graphical finesse, gameplay time, or control polish. In the case of Groovin’ Blocks, I previously reviewed the Nintendo Wii iteration which was an entertaining take on Tetris and similar titles, but with a welcome techno twist. Now the puzzler’s hit the iPod Touch/iPhone, and it couldn’t be any more fabulous.
Impressions: Women’s Murder Club: Death in Scarlet
When one thinks of the “casual adventure” genre, one’s mind undoubtedly turns to games with low production values, simple puzzle-solving, and absurdly paper-thin storylines. These days, those are such archaic accusations to make of the average casual adventure title. They’ve come such a long way that it’s difficult to differentiate a “casual” adventure from one that would be accepted within the confines of such inane circles as the “hardcore.” That said, James Patterson’s Womens’ Murder Club: Death in Scarlet is an entertaining and fully-featured adventure title that should attract fans from all walks of life – not just women and not just casual titles. What a silly assumption to make!
Impressions: Word Spin
If you’ve ever perused the world of casual games, you’ll be quite familiar with the abundance of word games available. There are plenty to choose from, alright, and for good reason. They’re all great sellers! The latest iPhone word game, Word Spin, has apparently been around a good while, selling millions of copies. It should follow that the mobile iteration should be no stranger to success, especially with its addictive nature and low price.
Impressions: Shark’s Treasure: The Quest of the Mermaids
The iPhone/iPod Touch’s built-in accelerometer can be used for a myriad of different things, but it’s mostly made use of by game developers to add motion control to their games. Whether its tilting, turning, or even the occasional shimmy and shake some games often have such controls unwillingly grafted onto perfectly fine mechanics, while others practically beg for this type of control scheme. While it may not be any kind of fabulous, Shark’s Treasure: The Quest of the Mermaids is a pleasant little diversion for Apple’s platform that makes the most of the unit’s inherent controls and offers tremendous value for its guppy-like asking price.
