Review: Four Hats

Taco Graveyard’s Four Hats is an addictive action game that combines bite-sized mayhem with a quirky takeoff of The Beatles’ A Hard Days’ Night. In this fictional band’s freshman outing, they’re fleeing from mobs of rabid fans and paparazzi. It’s a lighthearted endeavor that definitely doesn’t take itself seriously: Think Canabalt if you were Edward Cullen fleeing a gaggle of Twilight fangirls.

Review: Tiny Heroes

Tiny Heroes, at first glance, seemed much more like a tower defense-lite title than a full-fledged hardcore “protect the land” title. And I liked it. While I found Simutronics Corp.’s geoDefense an agreeable little mobile powerhouse, I instantly gravitated toward the cartoonish and more simplistic nature of Tiny Heroes, which boasts adorable little heroes (as the title suggests) setting out to pilfer treasure from any locale they can. While a little easier than hardcore tower defense fans may clamor for, it’s an engaging (and completely adorable) adventure that’s well worth your $2.99.

Review: Contre Jour

Contre Jour, a 99 cent adventure from Chillingo, is striking. Aesthetics mimic that of World of Goo, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, or even Limbo, and when you sit down to play the game, Angry Birds and several other successful titles are conjured. For this reason, it’s easy to look at this amalgam of genres and best-sellers and assume it’s simply a repackaging of something you’ve played before. It’s a wholly engrossing mobile adventure that you’d do well to tackle…I mean, it’s only a dollar.

Review: Save Yammi

When I first picked up a Nintendo DS, I knew I had to get Pac-Pix, a game that involved drawing Pac-Men and then drawing lines to corral them into the direction they needed to go, all in an effort to gobble up the several ghosts terrorizing you in each level. And I was completely engrossed. Fast-forward to 2001, and a friend of mine is appalled that I’ve never seen or heard of Chillingo’s mobile slide-fest Cut the Rope. So, like Angry Birds and the rest, I was initially hesitant to buy into whatever fad surrounded the popular title, until I dove right in and soon realized I couldn’t get enough of Save Yammi, a more recent release from BULKYPIX.

Review: HungryMaster

What do you get when you combine lovable retro-styled arcade graphics with absolutely abominable English localization and translation? HungryMaster, of course! In this innocently adorable, quirky little mobile title, you’re tasked with turning all the monsters you can eat into delicious foods for the diminutive Delica’s tummy. A sequel to developer xionchannel’s popular app ElectroMaster, this embarrassingly cute quickfire arcade-style game is packed with personality and easy-to-learn controls. But, like its patchy English, it still has quite a few kinks to work out before I can call it a must-have.
